God damn you are dumb. Do you even know the history of how the northern right whale was reduced to such low numbers? I thought about this BS website after the blue fin tuna vote for collapse that just occurred. Then I read this and wondered what is the point? Even when the science is clear that the Japanese sustainable catch argument falls flat on its face in light of the overwhelming empirical data it just doesn't matter to you or your whale exterminating friends. The fact that you do not even realize that the right whale was GOVERNED ALMOST TO EXTINCTION UNDER IWC REGULATIONS means nothing to you. This is why the SSCS gets so much support from scientist and biologist. We see the data and we read the opposing sides reasoning. You and your friends will not stop until every last fish and whale is hunted out of the water. Sustainability is just a buzz word used to delay any meaningful regulation that would stop the species march toward oblivion. It is becoming more and more clear to more and more people that this is a fight between greed and life. Tell your fellow species killers that they will be opposed by whatever means necessary.

The IWC has a new set of highly precautionary and conservative rules for setting safe catch limits. The rules were developed in the 1980's and early 1990's, and other than application by Norway, haven't been given much light of day yet. So when you say that sustainable whaling isn't possible you are putting your head in the sand, I'm afraid.

If you would be so kind as to check, you will find that the Right whale was actually protected internationally before the IWC even existed. And it's not the case that Japan has ever hunted northern right whales.

Let's finish with a simple example. You have a stock of animals which increases on average by 4% each year. If your harvests are lower than 1% each year, does your stock increase or decrease?

I am all for sustainability as the aim of regulations in fisheries etc. As for the tuna issue, I would be very happy to see ICCAT (especially EU member nations) now step up to the plate and clamp down of their fisheries industry to ensure compliance with agreed quotas. And the quotas ought to be set in line with ICCAT's scientific advice.

SSCS are just a bunch of lying show ponies. I'm afraid you will be dissappointed if you believe they will have any beneficial impact when history reflects on them. Events such as what happened at CITES however may be more significant as turning points as nations take up their mandates more seriously when they act through RMFOs such as ICCAT.
 

There is nothing wrong with sustainable whaling as conducted by Norway and Iceland.

It's much more animal and environmentally friendly than eating meat from factory farming.

The whales are happy in comparison to other meat animals...

btw , have you nread about the new breed of broilr sheep , that never go outdoors?

I'm afraid that the enviro movement consists mostly of urban people , who have never visited a forest etc and lived closely to the nature.
