Seiji Ohsumi on Antarctic whale research

Seiji Ohsumi writes (in Japanese) that it has been proven that Antarctic whale research based on non-lethal sampling methods alone can not be successful.

I like this article quite a lot and hopefully will get around to translating some of the more interesting points into English sometime... after I complete my run down of the Australia ICJ court case application.

UPDATE: Check the comments below, where Wubai has kindly posted a link to a FaceBook discussion forum where an English translation has already been posted. It ain't a perfect translation, but good enough to get the main points. Thanks Wubai!

For every day whaling seems more OK for me , vegetarian is though my main choice! The whales are OK compared to other food animals, can't the NGOs and animal rights people realize this?
I have had a real funny time , when a staff for Sweden's biggest animal rights group, Djurens Rätt, death threated me!!! Yeah, the police been here , and I have had a body guard to protect me from some animal rights people that are only looking for money.

The cause for their hatred for me is for instance this garbage they write on their site:

"Every year on the Faroe Islands (Denmark) 2,000 to 3,000 Dolphins are brutally murdered in a ‘traditional’ ceremony. This ‘tradition’, which goes back to 1584, involves, every year. The Dolphins are bound and dragged till they are beached. Next comes a general butchery which turns the sea blood-red as young men harpoon the victims and extract their entrails.

The killing is a ceremony rite for young men to show there virility!!

The historical and geographical status of the Faeroe Islands:
Self-rule was established 23 of March 1948. That law defines the Faeroe Islands as an autonomous region of Denmark with a large measure of legislative independence,

The Perfect World will take action and put an end to this cruel and barbarian custom, which has nothing to do with humanity and the twenty-first century.

I told them that because of animnal care reasons it is FORBIDDEN IN FAROE ISLANDS TO HARPOON WHALES! They also told the public that the Faroes kill 3000 dolphins per year, when the right number is 300!

Saw that the whalers will have whale watching on their boats in IcelAND!

Interesting take from a Kiwi who is not too fond of whaling but less fond of the fascistic undercurrents inherent in some anti-whaling campaigns: http://bit.ly/deHhl3

And everything is about money for the NGOs. Richard Black wrote that in the BBC, and I have an e-mail from one of Greenpeace Internationals Whales Campaigners who told me that GPs campaigns in the Antarctica was only for fundraising! ( I will not mention names here,).

Secondly , it is disgusting that the anti whalers don't give a shit about livestock.

I have met Peter Hammerstedt , Sea Shepherds second officer once in the GP office. I think he is good hearted but naive ( sorry Peter, you look like an office geek , not an warrior, little and tiny).

So long as the translation is being pimped here ;) ... I thought I'd post the original source, provided by native Japanese speaker HWPさん at End Eco-Terrorism.

(probably requires login after a bout of spam attacks from SS, but I wanted to give credit to the original translator since it took him awhile to do it)

Hi Ann, I think they're all probably good hearted, just deluded. These are perhaps the preconditions to becoming a zealot.

I've been watching "Whale Wars" lately and they all give such an overriding impression of having a good time being wreckless with their lives and feeling good about themselves. Although they probably can't see it themselves, their actions are primarily about pleasuring themselves. That's how they can "prioritize" whales over all the other stuff going on in the world, they have chosen their actions because these actions give themselves personal pleasure.

The scary thing is one of these people talks about how he is an elementary school teacher. Good grief, this lunatic is not the sort of person who should be presenting himself as a role model for the kids.

RadicalOmnivore, that author is a kiwi is he? Quite a few of us have good sense :) I'm reading a book on Sea Shepherd right now by a Japanese journalist (actually a friend of mine) and he goes into a lot of detail about the type of rhetoric employed by SS. Always overblown exaggerations in any situation. It's quite interesting as he has gone back through time to look at the type of propaganda Watson uses and it's the same stuff regurgitated over and over. "War war war", it always is.

The Whale Wars series is amusing in that it outs SS for the big scam they are repeatedly. For example when convicted criminal Peter Bethune was transported to Japan, "Great Leader" Watson described him as a "prisoner of war", yet in hte latest episode of WW Watson sits there on his well-fed backside and notes that Bethune said he told Watson that he wanted to go back to Japan.

This is why SS and Watson were mocked by mainstream comedy.

Thanks kujirakira, nice to see new sites like that one popping up.

It would appear that Kiwi article struck a nerve with Watson: http://bit.ly/cwmOxn

He always seems to assume that any criticism he gets is a propaganda then criticize others on some other grounds, even when the article is reasoned. This gap can get so big, sometimes I do wonder whether he does it out of ill intent. Generally I tend to think that in his head he really does believe in the stuff he says, but there are moments like this when I'm made to think that he is fully aware of the ill on his part.

That previous post was regarding Paul Watson... though I'm sure that was clear enough.
